To conclude our epic 50th anniversary season, Mini Se7en racer Dave Robinson has assembled a competitive team of racers to contend the Birkett Six Hour Relay Race this Saturday, 22nd October, at the Silverstone GP circuit.
The event marks a return to the 750 Motor Club's traditional end-of-season race, as we were there 50 years ago in 1966. Well, some of us were there anyhow!
Back in '66 the club members' cars wore the same number as they've been allocated this weekend – 32. Given the special anniversary event and enthusiasm from the 750 MC, 2016's Mini team will be aiming to repeat the third place finish of the first year. It will be a tall order, but anything's possible.
Whereas 23 teams took part in '66, up to 70 teams are expected this year, with a hugely diverse range of cars taking to the grid. The event actually goes right back to 1951, with both an all-out race for total laps and a handicap award too. Details of the scoring are at: http://www.750mc.co.uk/formulae/birkett.htm
The 1966 team consisted of Colin Youle in a 1293cc Cooper S, Nick Faure in a 970 S, Julian Vereker in an 850, Phil Wicks and John Waddell in an 850, then Bob Fox and Gordon Line in Formula Mini Se7ens.
We're delighted to announce that Bob Fox and Colin Youle will be joining us at the event, with a possible visit from Gordon Line too. Nick Faure is on holiday, while Phil Wickes sends his regards from the States. Sadly Julian Vereker passed away in 2000.
2016's team includes Julian Proctor, Steve Hopper, Darren Thomas, Dave Robinson, Andrew Deviny and Steve Trench. We'll keep you updated of their progress via the Mini 7 Facebook page.
Also look out for a full feature in Mini Magazine soon.
